When designing or choosing a pumping station, one of the most common questions we get asked is:

"Should I use a Duty/Standby system or a Duty/Assist system?"

While both configurations use multiple pumps and improve reliability compared to a single-pump installation, they serve very different purposes. Understanding the difference can help ensure your pumping station operates efficiently and is sized correctly for the application.

What is a Duty/Standby Pump System?

A Duty/Standby configuration consists of two pumps:

  • One pump operates as the duty pump (the primary working pump).
  • The second pump remains on standby and only operates if the duty pump fails or is taken out of service.
  • Many modern control panels alternate which pump is designated as duty, ensuring both pumps receive equal running hours and reducing wear.

How It Works

Under normal operation, only one pump runs at a time. If the duty pump develops a fault or cannot meet demand, the standby pump automatically takes over.

What is a Duty/Assist Pump System?

How It Works

During normal operation:

  1. The duty pump starts first.
  2. If the water level continues to rise and the duty pump cannot keep up with incoming flow, the second pump starts.
  3. Both pumps then run together to increase the pumping capacity.
  4. Once the level drops, the assist pump stops, and the duty pump continues until the station returns to its normal operating level.
